Routes
We have a few GPS tracks of walks that we have done. They are in the form of .gpx (GPS Exchange) files that can be sent to a GPS device and/or viewed in software such as Google Earth to get a pictorial representation of the route.
Downloading these files really should be easier but, unless/until I can make it so, here are some instructions as to what to do with them. The best way to proceed is browser-dependent, unfortunately. (Good ol’ Microsoft!)
For Internet Explorer:
- LEFT-click on the link to the file (the xml file opens up in a browser window);
- Now select “Page” -> “Save As” (a “Save as” dialogue appears with the chance to save the .gpx file.)
For Mozilla Firefox/Google Chrome:
- RIGHT-click on the link – a pop-up context menu will appear;
- select “Save link as” – a “Save as” dialogue should appear;
Now we should all be in the same position with a chance to save the .gpx file locally so, to save it and view it in Google Earth:
- select “Save link as” – a “Save as” dialogue should appear;
- fire up Google Earth;
- from the pull-down menu, select “File” -> “Open” – the open dialogue will appear;
- change the “Files of type” pull-down (bottom of the dialogue) to “GPS (*.gpx …)”;
- navigate to the directory where you saved that downloaded file;
- select your saved file and click “Open”;
- accept the default options Google Earth presents;
- you should see the walk displayed in Google Earth.
